What HRV Is Measuring
Heart rate variability is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats, governed largely by the balance between sympathetic (activating) and parasympathetic (calming) branches of the autonomic nervous system. Higher HRV generally reflects a nervous system with more flexible, adaptive capacity to shift between states; it isn't a direct measure of fitness or health on its own, despite sometimes being presented that way.
Why Daily Readings Bounce Around
HRV is sensitive to a wide range of same-day and prior-day influences beyond training load — alcohol, poor sleep, illness onset, travel, dehydration, and even the specific measurement method (nightly average during sleep versus a brief morning reading) can all shift the number meaningfully. This sensitivity is part of what makes it useful as an early warning signal, but also why a single low reading shouldn't be over-interpreted.
Trend Over Snapshot
The more defensible use of HRV is tracking your own personal baseline and trend over weeks, rather than comparing your absolute number to population averages or to other people — HRV varies enormously between individuals based on age, genetics, and fitness, so cross-person comparison is largely meaningless. A meaningful, sustained drop below your own rolling baseline is a more useful signal to act on (more rest, lower training intensity) than any single day's reading.
What HRV Can't Tell You
HRV is not a diagnostic tool and can't identify specific medical conditions on its own; a persistently low or erratic HRV pattern is a reasonable prompt to look more closely at sleep, stress, and training load, but it isn't a substitute for clinical evaluation if something feels genuinely wrong. Treat it as one input among several — alongside subjective fatigue, sleep quality, and training performance — rather than a single authoritative number.
