What Zone 2 Actually Means
Zone 2 refers to a heart-rate range — roughly where you can still hold a conversation but not sing — that corresponds to the intensity at which the body relies predominantly on fat oxidation and aerobic (mitochondrial) metabolism rather than anaerobic glycolysis. In practice this is a pace many trained individuals find uncomfortably slow, which is precisely the point: it's an intensity you can sustain for a long time without accumulating significant fatigue.
The Physiological Case
The strongest mechanistic argument for Zone 2 work is mitochondrial: sustained low-intensity aerobic training increases mitochondrial density and efficiency in skeletal muscle more reliably than high-intensity work alone, and mitochondrial function is one of the more consistently cited biological hallmarks of ageing. Zone 2 training is also associated with improved fat oxidation capacity and a rightward shift in the lactate curve — the point at which lactate starts accumulating faster than it can be cleared, a proxy for aerobic fitness.
Where the Evidence Is Softer
Much of the direct human evidence for Zone 2's superiority over other training approaches comes from endurance-sport physiology and elite-athlete training logs rather than randomised longevity trials, which don't really exist for this question. The honest position is that Zone 2 is a well-supported way to build an aerobic base and probably supports the same mitochondrial and metabolic pathways implicated in healthy ageing — not that it has been proven, on its own, to extend human lifespan.
A Practical Starting Point
Most coaches suggest the bulk of weekly training volume (roughly 70-80%) sit in this low-intensity zone, with a smaller portion dedicated to higher-intensity intervals — a ratio borrowed from endurance-sport periodisation rather than a longevity-specific trial. For most people without a cardiac history, the practical entry point is simply an easy, nasal-breathing-pace walk, jog, or cycle for 30-45 minutes, several times a week, tracked by heart rate rather than pace or perceived effort.
