Why Standard Recommendations Fall Short for Older Adults

Generic dietary protein guidelines (around 0.8g per kilogram of body weight per day in many national guidelines) were largely derived from nitrogen-balance studies in younger adults and are now widely considered insufficient for preserving muscle mass in older populations. The gap comes down to a phenomenon called anabolic resistance.

Anabolic Resistance, Explained

Anabolic resistance refers to the reduced muscle-protein-synthesis response to a given amount of dietary protein that develops with age — older muscle tissue needs a larger protein dose per meal to trigger the same synthesis response a younger person would get from less. This is part of why many geriatric-nutrition researchers now recommend higher per-meal protein targets, often in the range of 1.0-1.2g per kilogram of body weight daily for healthy older adults, and more in the context of active resistance training or illness recovery — though exact targets should be individualised, particularly for anyone with kidney disease, where protein intake needs specific medical guidance.

Distribution Across the Day Matters

Research on protein timing suggests that spreading intake relatively evenly across three or more meals — rather than concentrating most protein at dinner, a common pattern — produces a better cumulative muscle-protein-synthesis response than the same total intake skewed toward one meal. Each meal needs enough protein (commonly cited threshold around 25-30g of high-quality protein) to meaningfully stimulate synthesis given age-related anabolic resistance.

Protein Alone Isn't the Whole Picture

Protein intake supports muscle preservation most effectively alongside resistance training — the mechanical stimulus and the nutritional substrate work together, and neither fully substitutes for the other. Anyone with kidney disease, or on medications where protein intake needs monitoring, should get individualised dietary guidance from a licensed physician or registered dietitian rather than applying general population targets.
